Mentor Me Summit 2017

On this past Saturday I had the pleasure of being apart of the On This Journe Mentor Me Summit 2017 panel. 20 young ladies were selected not only to gleam from 6 different panelist, they were given prizes! Such as a glam squad for their prom day and a book scholarship for college. It was such a pleasure being around individuals that have shared the same experiences and to see what our future lawyers, doctors and/or even politicians looked like.

I had the pleasure of presenting the topic “I Am Beautiful”.  My subtopics were Fashion, Clothing and Makeup. Whenever I am on a panel I ALWAYS try to go against the grain….step outside the box. I took my make up off in front of everyone. Yes, you read right. We are made to believe we NEED makeup and can’t live with out it. I wanted to make a point that we are all beautiful with all our imperfections we may think we have. Plus you have to give your a face a break to breath. Its not what’s outside like the latest designer fashions, but what’s inside your brain such as education and heart such as love, compassion and sympathy towards others.

The Power Suit

Spring has finally sprung. Flowers are starting to bloom and change is in the air! What type of change? Less layers, more color and women wearing pant suits. Not just any type of pant suits, but bold bright colors. Yellow, green and/or red. Yes, a lot of women have been wearing pant suits for ages, but now it has trickled down into the fashion industry. This trend was on the runway for almost 2 seasons. Can this be the resurrection of the pantsuit? I think so. With everything going on in politics with Women’s Rights we are standing up and standing out. One women in particular whose been wearing pant suits since the 1990’s when her husband was President is Hillary Clinton.

I decided to give the pant suit a try and I absolutely love it. Not only is this look sophisticated, but its comfortable, easy to wear and can be styled several different ways. Going with a black pant suit would be typical so while shopping at Zara I went into the store with one goal in mind….to purchase a bright colored suit no matter what the color. Luckily I found just that!!!

Style Tip: Have fun with your suit. You don’t have to wear a white dress shirt or high heels. Be more adventurous and try it with a tee and sneakers.

Mixing Pastels

We are half way through the year….what’s on your New Year’s Resolution list? Have you accomplished anything? Its not too late! Add this to your list…Wear More Pastels!

I wrote a post entitled  Color of the year on how to style the colors Rose Quartz and Serenity. It was the dead of winter and I suggested the easiest way to incorporate those colors into your wardrobe with an accessory. It is now the unofficial start of the summer so the real pastel outfits can be worn. However I just have one rule when wearing pastels…

HAVE FUN!!!! The typical way to wear pastels is with white or black. Step out the box and wear pastels together, yes together.

1 skirt + 3 ways

It is now February 4th, you are looking through your closet saying “I have nothing to wear.” You have a ton of holiday attire such as sequins, feathers, silk skirts and gowns , but not sure how to incorporate these items into your everyday look. Have no fear, The Hopeful Stylist is here!

“Sequin attire is only to be worn at night.” If styled right sequin can be worn during the day and at night. Here’s how: I purchased this pencil skirt in silver from Banana Republic and styled it as a day, fun weekend and evening look.

Unknown-1

Rule #1 You can wear a t-shirt with anything. T-shirts can be dressed casually or dressed up for an evening event. If you want to dress up a t-shirt add a statement necklace.

Front Top Half

JCrew necklace|| Disney’s The Little Mermaid t-shirt

Jewelry

Topshop earrings

Disney’s The Little Mermaid is my favorite Disney movie ( I always cry at the end when she leaves her daddy) to keep with the theme of dressed up, yet fun I completed this look with a pair of Vivienne Westwood by Melissa shoes. I like the big red heart detail. FYI the shoes smell like bubble gum.

Whole Outfit

Rule#2 Sneakers can be worn with everything, within reason. Always use creative judgement when trying to add a pair of sneakers with a very dressy item. Adidas Superstar sneakers are easy to pair with any outfit.

What girl doesn’t love MAC Cosmetics ! I’m wearing Flat Out Fabulous Bright Plum Matte Lipstick and it is awesome. Very creamy, long wearing and a very bold color to add an extra pop to this outfit.

Front

Sneakers

Adidas Superstar

To complete this casual weekend look and for those chilly days and nights…an Adidas track jacket. I attended the NBA All Star game last year and decided to purchase this track jacket to commemorate the event.

Back (better)

Rule #3 Heels go with EVERYTHING!!! Especially with a touch of leopard. I paired the same sequin skirt with Sam Edelman two toned studded heels.

Shoes

I love the subtleness of the black studs on the back of the shoes. It adds a little rockstar feel. My favorite jewelry are statement necklaces…. I styled this look with a Topshop black studded piece. Whenever you wear a chunky sweater and you want to give yourself a waist add a belt.

NYX cosmetics makes great vibrant lipsticks. The shade I am wearing is Twisted Bright Violet. Its high voltage and very moisturizing!

Have some fun and try these looks!

How to style a coat

I ABSOLUTELY love to wear color. Yes, I know I live in New York the city of all black, but when I wear color I come alive. My 2 favorite coats this season are from  Topshop and Banana Republic .

The Topshop colorful knee length faux fur is a “I am here” coat. I decided to style it with  Madewell  flare overalls, a white shirt and silver platform creepers. My 2nd favorite part of this outfit are the bobby pins from Forever 21. Instead of using just one I used all 4. I love how they are 4 different size pearls.

The Banana Republic three button citron green coat had to be styled with even more color. Of course the first option would be to style it with all black or just one other color, but why not have some fun with it! I kept the fabrication simple, the entire outfit is of silk….different shades of green. I added a touch of the color bordeaux with the tights and bag. To top off the outfit I paired it with black ankle strap platform creepers.
